Following a reconnaissance trip to Vietnam in February 2003,Rivages du MondeA French river cruise operator met the first local shipowner who, at that time, owned the only two passenger cruise ships located on the Mekong River.
Since 2003,Rivages du MondeHe began marketing cruises between My Tho, a small Vietnamese town located 100 km from Saigon, and Tonlé Sap Lake in Cambodia, so that passengers could later visit the famous temples of Angkor.
Gradually, until 2010, Mekong cruises became a great success in the French market.
Taking advantage of this success,Rivages du MondeIn 2010, they began marketing these cruises in other markets, such as Germany and the UK. This is how the brand was born."Mekong Waterways", in direct reference to this river cruise that is now enjoying great popularity.
This venture was strengthened thanks to the signing of a strategic agreement between the French operator and the Vietnamese shipbuilding partner.
In 2011, the new ship "Mekong Prestige 1" was launched from the Saigon shipyards, followed in 2012 by a second ship, the "Mekong Prestige II". These two sister ships, with 32 cabins each, were in service until the Covid crisis, one dedicated entirely to French-speaking markets and the other to German-speaking and English-speaking markets.
Following the reopening of Asian destinations in 2023,Mekong WaterwaysIt presented a new ship, "La Marguerite", whose name refers to the novel "The Lover", by the French writer Marguerite Duras.
